charade

Well, wasn’t it Shakespeare that said, “When strangers do meet in far off lands, they should e’er long see each other again”? Reggie from Charade quoted. This suspense filled drama also gave some romance to viewers back in the 60’s when it came out. Audrey Hepburn plays her part really well, and Cary Grant as always holds his own amidst a star studded cast. Walter Mattau plays in the movie as well. He plays an excellent villian.

What is the plot of Charade? Here it is…After Regina Lampert (Audrey Hepburn) falls for the dashing Peter Joshua (Cary Grant) on a skiing holiday in the French Alps, she discovers upon her return to Paris that her husband has been murdered. Soon, she and Peter are giving chase to three of her late husband’s World War II cronies, Tex (James Coburn), Scobie (George Kennedy) and Gideon (Ned Glass), who are after a quarter of a million dollars the quartet stole while behind enemy lines. But why does Peter keep changing his name?.

The film was directed by Stanley Donen and the film score was done by none other than Henry Mancini. Mancini brings this movie to life with his flair for unique instruments and the jazzy feel to the film. There is even a track where traditional circus and fair music is used, adding to the suspenseful scenes in which it is used. Overall I give the score a 8.5. Some of the music is a bit repetitive, but still really enjoyable.
